Re: PORTFOLIOS, DO AND DONTS, TIPS AND TRICKS?
you mean a physical portfolio you'd take to an interview or an online portfolio or you mean like personal archiving/what to keep what not to keep?
I never had an online portfolio and when I got jobs before I had a very primitive portfolio which was just printouts in a nice folder.. this time around I'm gonna get get a leatherbound 11x17 20 something page portfolio made for designers to show their work. get everything printed out nice and set in the sleeves with accompanying info...they've got a pocket inside for extra portfolios and business cards too...I'll post a link as for online portfolio, I haven't got to that yet...although many interviews I've been on they've asked for it and I'm just sitting there like 'well..ugh...well...' I'm old school...my mentor always told me to have a very professional and well put together physical portfolio and that should be all you need... as for what to put in, I've heard a little of everything on advice on that subject. Some say put in what you're good at, some say put in a variety of all types of different stuff you're capable of, some say only use work you've done in the past, some say make up stuff to showcase your potential... I can't call it...if you go to the bookstore there's often portfolio samples in some of the design magazines...these are samples from big company big money jobs so I'll mimick some of those projects for my own portfolio |

Re: PORTFOLIOS, DO AND DONTS, TIPS AND TRICKS?
my 2 cents
Show the type of work you perfer and you're interested in. Don't try to be a jack-of-all trades if you're not. If you have web projects, show screen shots in a portfolio and present it on a laptop. If you have print, present the actual printed materials. If its a large project or a big ass book you don't what to lug have it and some spreads photographed. create a PDF of your best logos, spreads, etc and attach to your email If its print: mag layouts, branding, etc show that. if its web show business site, personal sites, banners etc only include your best work. no filler like a wack rap album. if you only have 10 strong pieces, present thsoe 10. don't include bullshit just so you can say you have 12 |

Re: PORTFOLIOS, DO AND DONTS, TIPS AND TRICKS?
Carbonmade : Your online portfolio. has the best looking online portfolios I have seen. I use this and coroflot.com. Coroflot is not as intuitive and doesnt look as nice. I am a huge fan of carbonmade though.

Re: PORTFOLIOS, DO AND DONTS, TIPS AND TRICKS?
Here's my advice-
1- Have an online portfolio, whether designed by you or using one of those portfolio sites. Nowadays, its one of the first things asked to be seen. Creating your own site, whether the graphics, coding or both will itself be a portfolio piece. Provide a link on your site with your resume in a PDF format for employers to download. 2- Have a physical portfolio. You can use a simple binder type with sleeves or get creative and make homemade books, cases, etc. Always have hard copies of you resume and/or business card to give to the employer/interviewer. I would also have printouts to leave with the employer- maybe a one sheet with a few thumbnails (like logos, for example) and a larger primary piece. Also have your contact info on it. Just though of this as a possible good idea to leave behind at interviews- lets say you do web design and print design or illustration. Make a CD with the interactive stuff while the CD booklet showcases your print work. Compact and easy to carry around. 3- Like some have said here, showcase what you're good at. Me, I'm a jack-of-all-trades – I can do retouching, photography, illustration, design, logos, type design, packaging, etc. – so I show a bit of everything. |
