****THE OFFICIAL LITTLEBIGPLANET THREAD***
For all your LittleBigPlanet, and LBP related information. Makes all of the information and vids a ot easier to keep track of, not to mention not flooding the board with LBP threads. That said I'll kick off this thread with the basics of what LittleBigPlanet is all about.
LittleBigPlanet LittleBigPlanet (sometimes abbreviated to LBP) is an upcoming puzzle platformer and world creation video game for the PlayStation 3. In LittleBigPlanet, players control small characters (nicknamed either "Sackboy" or "Sackgirl", owing to their material and appearance), each of which can jump, move, and grab objects. Players can use their abilities to shape and develop the highly manipulatable environment to build custom spaces either individually, collaboratively, and/or competitively. Levels focus on co-operative, physics-based gameplay, and players can use mechanisms such as cogs and blocks to build anything from small level parts to large, complex worlds. The game will also allow opportunities for players to acquire new skills and tools. A major focus of LittleBigPlanet will be on the global community features through the PlayStation Network for players to interact and share their "patches" - levels and other modifications - as well as online play. Players can navigate their way through the world by jumping, pushing, grabbing, running to overcome numerous puzzles provided by the game's robust physics engine. Players will also face physics-based enemies ranging from the small such as burning logs, to big "bosses" built around one of six AI "brains" available in the player's toolset. In addition, harmful objects can be placed in the game, such as pits of fire and being "squished" or flattened by an object that cause the player to restart that section of the level; players pop and roll out of restart points nearby. A scoring system is also in place, in the form of a time trial with a start and end gate and players collecting world items such as sponge. Scoring is based on both time and execution of the level. Dangers All objects and surfaces can have "dangers" applied to them. Any object can be set on fire, electrified, or frozen and the character will react differently when it comes into contact with each of them. Fire will singe the character if it is touched briefly but he will die if in contact with it for a longer period. Similarly, electrified items will electrocute the player and eventually kill him if he is in contact with it for prolonged periods. Prolonged contact with frozen objects will set the character in a block of ice. During this time the player cannot move but the ice cube acts under the physics of the game and can therefore slide around and be pushed around by other players. The player can break free from the ice by shaking the controller. Explosives are also to feature in the game. The player can also be crushed if trapped under or between heavy items. Objects Objects are made of many different, selectable materials, such as felt, wood, metal or sponge. The materials act realistically; wood does not change shape when you stand on it or grab it, while felt "squishes" and deforms. Objects are selectable from a pull-out menu, nicknamed "Pop-It", accessible at any point during play. Usable items are not limited to physical objects; from the "Pop-It" menu "stickers" are also selectable. These "stickers" are pasted to any object or wall throughout the world, limited only by the player/level creator's imagination. The stickers can be created from photos taken from the PlayStation Eye. A resource system is also in the game, where sponge and other items are collected by the player in order to fuel their ability to build new objects. Player control Players can jump, move, and grab objects by using the controller. The analogue sticks are used for movement and camera control during the game, but may also be used to move a characters' arms by pressing a certain button to swap between functionality. The head can be moved by using the Sixaxis tilt control. Character movement will also be based on how hard the controller is used, much like pressure sensitivity; for instance, when the L2 or R2 triggers are held (for the left and right arms respectively), jerking the analogue stick will cause the player to slap another player inside the game. Grabbing is also a key ability; it allows a character to pull an object, or even another character, in whatever direction they are currently moving. This allows, for example, a chain of players to hang off a rope when only one character is actually grabbing the rope. Also, it allows a jetpack-equipped player to carry other players through the sky. Emotions are also a controllable aspect of the characters. Aside from the normal expression the player's avatar exhibits, the player also has a choice of four different emotions to show, each emotion triggered by holding down R1 and pressing a directional button on the controller's D-pad. Starting from the upward directional button and going clockwise, the emotions are as follows: happy, angry, sad, and nervous. Each emotion has three different levels of intensity, the emotion growing more intense with each consecutive press. Kyle Schubel of SCEA also mentioned they want to expand the emote system even more |

Re: ****THE OFFICIAL LITTLEBIGPLANET THREAD***
User-created content
After the player has completed three of the levels which ship with the game they will be able to access Create mode, LittleBigPlanet's integrated content-creation system. Any level or individual object can be edited by the player. This includes those which ship with the game, are created by other users or are created by the player. When in Create mode, the player can fly around the level on a jetpack. Pressing the down button on the d-pad will deactivate the jetpack, allowing the user to test the level under normal game conditions. Create mode allows the player to dynamically place, edit, morph, rotate and interact with objects within the game world. The tactile design of the objects and materials available react as at the player would expect when under game physics. Objects can be made out of glass, metal, sponge, polystyrene, cardboard and rubber. More complex items can be built using these materials in conjunction with glue, bolts, string, rods, springs, elastic, winches and pistons. Players will also have access to a range of pre-made objects, such as vehicles, which are shipped with the game or user-created objects which can be given as rewards by the creator for completing his or her level. The user can obtain new objects and materials by collecting the Prize Bubbles placed throughout the pre-made levels. The player may place stickers onto the objects in their level. These stickers can be images included in the game or stored on the user's hard drive, photos taken using the PlayStation Eye camera or screenshots taken in-game. From here, levels can be uploaded onto the game's servers where other players can download play and edit them. When levels are created, the player can choose to provide a reward for completing the level. Objects given as prizes can then be used in the player's own level, however they are not able to provide it as a reward. The developers hope that this will help expand the share aspect of the game by encouraging users to discuss others' levels with each other and in turn exponentially improve a level's popularity. Character customisation The player may customise their character in a range of ways. They are able to select a base colour and texture for their Sackboy from a range of materials and designs. They are also able to create items for the character to wear such as masks and clothes as well as give them pre-made items including swords and capes. The game will also feature items based on other PlayStation 3 franchises such as a Killzone 2 mask and character models based on Kratos from the God of War series , Nariko from Heavenly Sword and Snake from the Metal Gear Solid series. Multiplayer LittleBigPlanet features a range of multiplayer options. Levels can be played online with up to four players, locally with up to four players or with a mixture of up to four online and local players. Up to four local users can play together in Create mode, the ability to create levels with up to four players online will be added in and update at some point after the game's launch. How multiple users play with each other is dependant on the design of the level and how the users choose to play allowing the players to choose whether they play cooperatively or battle against each other to get to the finish line first or collect the most bubbles. Each local player will also be able to sign in to their own PlayStation Network account and individually collect trophies for their own account. This is the first time such a feature has been included in a PlayStation 3 game. |

Re: ****THE OFFICIAL LITTLEBIGPLANET THREAD***
Gameplanet: LittleBigPlanet Preview
![]() YESTERDAY EVENING, SONY INVITED myself and several other gaming journalists to have a go at LittleBigPlanet. We were shown the level building tools and then let free, with two of us to a console, in order to have a go and see what we could do. We had the choice of either building levels or playing through the actual game if we wanted to (I did both). My first partner had to leave early for a dinner appointment; which may have been for the best as while we were messing around with the level building stuff he managed to kill me by dropping a giant wheel on me. My second partner managed to not kill me, which I was grateful for. For those who haven't been following the development of Sony's new community-based game, the LittleBigPlanet experience starts with players learning about their character’s powers to interact physically with the environment. There are obstacles to explore, bits and pieces to collect and puzzles to solve – requiring a combination of brains and collaborative teamwork. As you begin to explore, your creative skills will grow, and soon you'll be ready to start creating and modifying your surroundings – the first step to sharing them with the whole community. Building/editing a level is all handled within the game's levels. Unlike other games with complicated tools and screens, LittleBigPlanet has you building the levels while still running (or flying) around the level. It's very simple to do, and while some of the controls take a bit of getting used to, this is still by far the easiest modding tool I have ever seen for a gaming engine. And what an engine! LittleBigPlanet is just gorgeous; from the textures and the clean, crisp 3D graphics to the adorable Sackboy character you play as. There is nothing about this game that doesn't look good. And it plays well too. I should point out I am not a big fan of jumping games (platformers). In fact, I usually hate them. LittleBigPlanet though, I don't know what it is about it, but there is just so much charm in this game that even when you are failing constantly on the same few jumps (or watching your partner fail and have to wait for them) you are still having fun. I never once noticed myself or the person playing with me get frustrated, which is very good considering the number of times we were both messing things up for each other. There is one thing I will say for LittleBigPlanet; this game will end friendships. I can very easily see the best of friends throwing controllers at each other out of sheer annoyance. This is mostly because the camera focuses on the person leading in first place, and therefore if any of the other players fall behind or go off the screen, they have five seconds to get back into view or they die. Granted, it won't really matter if you do lose a friendship or two over this game - Sackboy can be your new friend. Sackboy is probably one of the cutest characters I have ever seen in my life. He just has such huge appeal to so many different people. He's cute but wimpy, and best of all, you can customise your own Sackboy from an extremely large variety of looks. I was a trenchcoat-wearing googly-eyed ninja. My mum always wanted me to be a doctor, but I had to follow my heart. I never actually did end up building a good functional level; however the people next to me seemed to build a very impressive level involving a rocket platform that activated when you pressed a button. You'd then have to fly by jumping up at a slight angle to land on a higher platform, and continue to the end of the level. It was very cool, and considering it only took them about two hours to make it, impressive to boot. Once your level is built you can also decorate it with various items, including stickers, and all of these items can be found by playing through the single player game (which is filled with tons of great and interesting levels) or by using an Eye-Toy camera to take pictures and decorate the world (or your Sackboy) with them. We were shown a level that had a "Go The Warriors" sign on a mountain side. The level of creativity is truly only limited by your imagination. I overheard someone talking about how they're going to build levels for their kids as a way of telling them stories (how cool is that?). You can even go and edit the levels already created within the game. Or, if you see someone else's creation that you like, you can select it and add it to your list of favourites, which is a lot easier than trying to rebuild it yourself. Personally I don't know how much time I would spend building levels in this game, but I definitely would play them and have tons of fun doing it. I was reminded of two things while playing LittleBigPlanet. The first was thinking about YouTube. The way you will be able to upload built levels with friends, and share them for others to play, rate and comment on. It's very much like a YouTube for gaming and that's extremely exciting. The other thing it reminded me of was playing with Lego as a kid. Just the excitement and simpleness of having these basic building blocks and seeing what people come up with. I am still enthralled when I see some of the amazing things people accomplish with Lego. I can't wait to see what people do when they get their hands on LittleBigPlanet. I also can't wait to play it with some of the people in my life who usually aren't that into games, but who I know would love this. Last edited by Grael4; 09-26-2008 at 05:08 PM. |

Nothing yet, but apparently most of the beta levels will be deleted once the full game comes out. Of course a select few will make it through to the full game, but those will be the exceptional levels as expected. If any info on getting paid for levels drops I will post the info in this thread. |

Re: ****THE OFFICIAL LITTLEBIGPLANET THREAD***
New impressions from Yahoo:
Yahoo: LittleBigPlanet turns gamers into creators ![]() NEW YORK (Reuters) - A new videogame allows players to conjure up their own design ideas and create playable content that can be uploaded and shared. ADVERTISEMENT And gamers can do it from the privacy of their own home with Sony Computer Entertainment America's LittleBigPlanet. For years, PC gamers have been able to modify games like Unreal Tournament 3 and Half-Life 2 to create playable levels and linear entertainment ("Machinima"). Will Wright took the concept mainstream with The Sims and his latest creation, Spore. On Oct 21 console gamers will be given the tools necessary to build their own virtual experiences. Everyone from game developers to gamers are looking forward to this sudden shift in the videogame industry. "The best thing about user-generated content is that it decreases the space between an idea in your head and bringing it to life on the screen," said Kareem Ettouney, art director of LittleBigPlanet and co-founder of Media Molecule, a game development studio in England. "A few years ago, even if you worked as a level designer inside a game company, you'd have to work with a programer, an artist, a scripter and an audio programer to make your idea come to life." With LittleBigPlanet, if you think it, you can make it. The game is a collection of intuitive tools that allow players to customize everything from their characters to the levels of gameplay they'll be challenged with. "We really wanted to push this game and it turns out we didn't even use half of what was there," said Zach Gage, of Team Sportsmanship, which won $1,000 for Best of Jam at a 24-hour Game Jam at Parsons The New School for Design last week. Over 150 students, grouped into 19 teams, were given an advanced copy of the game and 24 hours to create an interactive experience, which was judged by two members of the Media Molecule development team. The winning Parsons entrants will be playable in the final version of LittleBigPlanet in a special Parsons section of the game. Sony will release the game, both as a retail disc and as a digital download, through PlayStation Network on Oct 21. LittleBigPlanet will have a huge online component, including team-based multiplayer options for designing levels together, as well as an active community with user feedback on created levels. Media Molecule will continue to support LittleBigPlanet with additional downloadable content moving forward. "People will want to create things that we haven't dreamed of and we'll want to respond to that," said Ettouney, adding gamers will use LittleBigPlanet to create a wide array of entertainment-like graphic novels, personal storybooks and plays. There were nearly as many female students in the Parsons Game Jam as males, and non-gamers outnumbered the gamers. "I don't think of it as a videogame -- even though it is, I look at it as a different form of creativity," said Parsons student Erica Osher, whose team, The Sleepwalkers, won $500 for Best Use of Tools. Whether creating content alone or with friends, Ettouney said the target audience for this game is "everyone." |

Re: ****THE OFFICIAL LITTLEBIGPLANET THREAD***

Re: ****THE OFFICIAL LITTLEBIGPLANET THREAD***
I am going to rent this game, my kid will love it, but as for myself I am not seeing what is so spectacular about it. I am an older gamer now and these style/type of games just do not interest me anymore. And they haven't for years.
I guess we will have to see. |

Like their neighbor's broken inanimate object has ruined their life. Same deal. I have not hated on this game I just said I don't see the hype. My kid will love it though. So I am going to stay informed. |

I miss good Survival Horror games. Like I said I am going to get it one way or another I just don't see myself playing it for a long time. But then again you never know. |

I haven't' heard that much on Disgaea, if it is tight then I am all for checking it out. I haven't played a good Survival Horror game since the first Fatal Frame which was excellent. RE just became to much. and SH was excellent it was oversaturated and the story line was crazy. I beat RE remake on Gamecube 8 different times just to get all the weapons. The Survival Horror genre needs a comback. I thought Fear was whack, and Condemded had potential but they tried to do too much with multi-player. Just stick to single player and roll with it. |
